About the Project

This summer Embrace Theatre will tour an original play celebrating the richness of Saskatchewan’s outdoors, presenting it… outdoors in Saskatchewan!  With the support of Saskatchewan Parks and other Saskatchewan organizations, this outdoor play for families will travel the province, entertaining thousands of people in many communities.

Utilizing traditional scenes, music, clowning, puppetry, and anything else we can think of, we want to tell the stories of Saskatchewan’s outdoors and share them with the people of Saskatchewan. This play is being created in a truly innovative way: using a Facebook page which invites anonymous story submissions from across the province, our audience has helped and continues to help create the play. As creative work progresses, it will be shared on this page, inviting audiences into every step of the creative process.

Each performance will be followed by an informal, fun workshop for any young people (or older people!) interested in learning about theatre, puppetry, music or any other aspect of the performance. This will allow audiences to experience the joy of theatrical creation for themselves.

And all of this will be offered to audiences FREE OF CHARGE!

The Story

Two young siblings are taken from their accustomed urban world of video games and TV for a family camping trip. Despite their initial reluctance, the wildlife, the freedom, and the glow of the campfire give them a new understanding of themselves, their family, and their world. With actors taking on multiple roles, manipulating puppets, playing instruments, singing, and telling stories, audiences of all ages will be taken on a spectacle-filled journey into Saskatchewan’s outdoors.

About Embrace Theatre

Acknowledging the communal nature of both the theatre and humanity, Embrace Theatre seeks to embrace all theatrical forms and all audiences and to invite communal discovery and joyful growth.

Recognizing that different circumstances call for different methods, Embrace Theatre seeks to serve our audience by:

  1. Constantly innovating, learning, and evolving theatre practice, never being content with “how it’s always done”
  2. Reaching out to audiences in new and unique ways, meeting them on their own terms
  3. Presenting work that invites dialogue, exploration, and growth

The name “Embrace” is also an invitation.

Embrace Theatre was nominated for a Saskatoon and Area Theatre Award for Achievement in Sound Design for its 2013 production of Bottome's Dreame.

Embrace Theatre's production of Stop Kiss by Diana Son recieved rave reviews and sold out its March-April, 2014 run.

Meet The Artists

Dakota Hebert was born and raised in Meadow Lake. Her theatre career began in Saskatchewan and has taken her across the country. Although she has seen the beauty within the other provinces, they can't quite compare to Saskatchewan's outdoors.

Shelby Lyn Lowe is currently a Regina based who received her BFA in Theatre Design last year. Select design credits include Production Design Assistant for Kaleidocycle (Globe Theatre Sandbox Series), Set and Costume Designer for The Unseen and Lookingglass (U of R), Design Assistant for Billy Bishop Goes to War, The Wizard of Oz, and Pride and Prejudice (Globe Theatre), and Costume Design Assistant for Leading Ladies (Persephone Theatre). Select stage management credits include ASM for Eurydice (U of R), ASM for Carmen (Saskatoon Opera), stage manager for Hansel and Gretel (LOOP), and ASM for the upcoming production of The Magic Flute (Saskatoon Opera). As a lover of all things involving puppetry, Shelby was a participant of the Old Trout Puppet Workshop Banff Puppet Intensive in January of 2014.

Chris Donlevy is a Saskatoon theatre artist, opera singer, musician, and graduate of the UofS Drama Department. He was last seen in Embrace Theatre’s production of Stop Kiss through Live Five at the Refinery. Chris is so pumped to be presenting a piece that will inspire kids to enjoy Saskatchewan and all it’s outdoor glory!

Emma Thorpe is a actor, singer, dancer, and stage combatant. She is a graduate of the Randolf Academy of the Performing Arts in Toronto and is currently finishing her BFA in Acting at the University of Saskatchewan. Having grown up exploring Saskatchewan's outdoors with her family, she is very excited to be working on this project.

Charlie Peters has a BFA in Acting from the U of S but works in theatre not only as an actor but also as a director of theatre and opera, playwright, dramaturge, lighting designer, and educator. In 2013 he won the SATAward for Outstanding Emerging Artist. He is the Founding Director of Embrace Theatre, President of the Saskatchewan Playwrights Centre, a board member of 25th Street Theatre, and a consultant for Crossing Bridges: The Saskatoon Theatre Blog. His personal website can be found here.

How the Money Will Be Used

Our team of professional artists has been working hard collecting your stories (dozens have been submitted) and turning them into a piece of imaginative theate. Now, we need to tour it across the province! Money raised will be used to cover travel from park to park in July and August.

Fundraising for this project is especially important as we want to present this show FREE OF CHARGE to familes around our great province.
